3 Easy Infant Sensory Activities.

3 Easy Infant Sensory Activities.

Whether you’re a first time parent like Andrew and I, or juggling life with baby number three - you’ve quickly learned entertaining an infant can be hard work sometimes. In those months when they’re past the potato phase, but not quite fully engaged in toys, it can be hard to keep them active and amused singing every nursery rhyme you know and reading books all day.

When Rowan was starting to move around a lot around 5 months old, we definitely needed some activities for him as all he really wanted to do was explore every inch of our not yet baby proofed house. I turned to TikTok for inspiration and am now sharing with you three super easy sensory activities for your baby you can set up with things you already have around the house. Please keep in mind that these are just ideas I found on the internet, and children should only be engaging in these activities 100% supervised as with most things at a young age, these materials could be hazardous.

Sensory Activity 1: Tape Wall

Materials: Masking Tape

This is by far the easiest and most basic activity, great for practicing hand eye coordination and a pincer grasp. All you need to do is stick various size strips of masking tape to a wall or surface and let baby practice grabbing them and pulling them off. Colorful masking tape makes for the most fun, we only had painters tape on hand so that’s what worked for us.

Sensory Activity 2: Strainer Pull

Materials: Kitchen Strainer, Elastic, Ribbon

Using any household kitchen strainer thread material through the holes and let baby once again practice hand eye coordination and pincer grasp by pulling strands out. We used small pieces of elastic as the pull also lent to a fun sound to heighten the senses more. I’ve seen this done with pipe cleaners (these however made me nervous with sharp edges), and other various ribbon. Strainer can be upright or upside down for the same fun and effect.

Sensory Activity 3: Sensory Bags

Materials: Gallon Ziploc Bags, Water, Cooking Oil, Food Coloring, Masking Tape, Optional: beans, buttons, beads, googly eyes

By far a favorite, but also the most time consuming for parents to set up - fill gallon size Ziploc bags with water and cooking oil (we were running low but more oil will lend to a more lava lamp effect) and some food coloring for more fun then add in any rounded household objects you can find. Secure both sides of the bags to the floor with some tape and let baby have endless fun using touch to move the objects around and feel the shapes. We used things we happened to have on hand so opted for buttons, raw beans and small craft beads. Originally saw this done with googly eyes which I think would be so fun! Be sure to not using any objects with sharp edges as they could potentially puncture the bags.
